As fans prepare for the launch of Sony's PlayStation 3 in Europe, energy information website Sust-it has recommended that buyers prepare for some eye-watering electricity bills.
The site warns that the US version of the PlayStation 3 comes with a sizeable 380W power supply, which is over twice as big as its main competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360 at 165W, and over seven times more power hungry than the PlayStation 2.
If a user combines a PS3 with a sizeable plasma display to take full advantage of the graphics capabilities of the machine, users could be burning 1.4kWh of power per hour costing up to £1.19 for a five-hour session.
Ross Lammas, from Sust-it, said: "We expect new car launches to announce more performance with less fuel consumption, so it's a pity that this does not apply to electronic goods. Is it not time for an energy efficiency rating system for consumer electrical goods?"
The site claims that consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to reduce energy consumption, and therefore reduce their own CO2 emissions.
"The PS3 again highlights the need for clear labelling of the potential power consumption of electronic devices, rather than relying on small print in the technical specification sheets," Sust-IT said.

You people are crazy
Just because it has a 380W power supply doesn't mean that its using 380W every second its plugged in. I have a 600W in my computer...doesn't mean its using all that all the time. Normally, having read power consumption articles for my components I will be using around 300-350W of my AVAILABLE 600 and this is with HUGE amounts of overclocking. Now think about the PS3 with stock clock speeds, 1 optical drive, 1 small 5400rpm hard drive. Obviously its not using 380W all the time, educate yourself people and don't listen to the people bashing the PS3...and for heat, I think you need to wrap it in a blanket to have it overheat I Fold for like 24hours at a time and its in a wooden cabinet and yeah it gets hot but it runs just fine. I really don't like when people bash the PS3, its a great product...oh and for those who dont know, Folding is basically doing research for Stanford University where they find cures and learn how to treat sicknesses that plague our world....so I'd say that out weighs the whole eco-friendly thing.

Ahhhh Electiricy raitings?
Ummm don't you have those on most consumer electronics? OK so ovens and fridges and freezers.... you can get A grade efficient up to E (E being worst) (most are C)

Lol
Come on, if you can afford the system to begin with, you can afford to power it. Plus, there's a lot of PC gaming rigs with 1 kilowatt power supplies to power dual 8800s and stuff like that

Stupid.
This is one of the worst articles I have ever read. Does the author know how to do basic math? How is a 380W power suply able to use 1.4KWh? Thats like saying an 2KWh electric heater uses 5KWh. --- From the editor: Watt indicates electrical power per second. KWh indicates electrical power per hour. A 380Watt power supply translates into 1.368 kWh: 380*60*60= 1,368,000
