Windows Vista has more to fear from Windows XP than rival operating systems, according to an industry analyst.
A survey of 600 companies with more than 1,000 employees in the US and Europe by Forrester Research found that Microsoft's six year-old XP has become standard in enterprises.
Around 84 per cent of Microsoft PCs run Windows XP, up from 67 per cent a year ago.
Only a third of survey respondents intend to start Vista deployments by the end of 2008, and a further 17 per cent will start the process in 2009 or 2010.
"Vista's biggest competition is not Apple or Novell or Red Hat, it is Microsoft itself with XP," the report said.
Forrester Research also found a significant number of companies looking forward to Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, which is due early next year and is supposed to be the last major upgrade.
Microsoft has already extended its deadline to end support for Windows XP, offering an additional five years past the original 2009 cut off date.

I run XP on my PC. I recently bought a laptop with Vista - I hate it, with all those unnecessary alterations and I find it so difficult to use. So, for me Vista is the worst thing I have had to use.

Around 84 per cent of Microsoft PCs still run Windows XP
Since Microsoft has 95% of the market and 84% of that is XP why did Microsoft create an operating system that alienates the 84% while trying to compete with the MAC market, when they are so small of a market and are so brand loyal

xp vs vista
Nothing works with Vista. Its slow and apart from the sidebar which was ripped off from apple its no better than xp. Why should people upgrade their pc's to run an operating system which provides no additional functions apart from a new age way of flicking through windows that no-one uses much anyways because they're so used to and happy with xp's method of clicking on windows at the bottom of the screen?

My brother and I had to set up a couple of PC's. One XP one Vista... Guess who walked away job finished after an hour...me and XP. My brother's still struggling with the Vista problems and he's an IT pro!

Vista verses X p
I run Xp on my desktop and Vista on my laptop,although Vista has some good features and is good on the security aspect of the operating system.If I had to choose between Vista and X P I would go for X P every time. The Word processer on vista is very poor compared with X P so much so I have downloaded Open Office to use instead .The file search options are better on Vista than XP , also there are better features on the photo part of the Vista Programme.I think Microsoft need to review the operating system and introduce some of the features of XP into Vista on the first service pack . In conclusion I would stick with X P for a couple of years till Microsoft get it right

XP on laptops
We just bought a new Dell laptop for my wife and after checking the performance difference between Vista and XP we went with XP! Vista my be great on a high performance desktop but it sure seems to be a dog on a reasonably priced laptop!

A more balanced take...
I'll ignore the fan boi drivel in the other response. I'm one of the people who upgraded to Vista when it came out. As a software support professional, it was essential for someone in my company to run Vista as soon as possible. I have a very capable machine, which scores a solid 5.0 on the Windows Experience Index. (According to Microsoft's website, "Computers with a base score of 5.0 were the highest performing computers available when Windows Vista was released.") The max possible score is 5.9, and two of the 5 elements that are measured scored that. So yes, my system can handle Vista. Yes, Vista is very pretty. Yes, it has some excellent features that blow XP out of the water. Yet despite all of that, I am on the verge of "upgrading" to XP. I say this because Vista is such a resource hog that my high end apps actually perform worse under it than they did with XP. Stability leaves much to be desired. In fact, just this morning my second monitor wouldn't come out of the sleep state. I had to refresh the desktop to get it back. Driver support is still lacking, with drivers manufacturer drivers completely unavailable for some of my hardware (like my Lightscribe DVD drive) or requiring bi-weekly updates (like my graphics card). As for DirectX 10 -- one of the biggest draws for me -- I only have one game that takes advantage of it. Those graphics are gorgeous, but aren't worth the 20% drop in frame rate that goes along with them. (I have a BFG GeForce 8800GTX-OC, by the way. My card is certainly no slacker!) Once Vista receives its first service pack in the first quarter of next year, it will probably become a solid operating system. The same thing happened with XP, although even that didn't achieve awesomeness until SP2. So it's extremely likely that I'll be switching back for a while. By the way, it's "Flintstone".

Who's a lazy low life?
Judging by the way elkillerx writes it would seem he has a poor knowledge of the English language. He also seems easily impressed with eye candy. If XP and the programs you run on it are what you need for the present, why change? If you can't afford Vista, why change? And so on. Get the picture?

XP versus Vista
Well, your comments make you sound ugly and stone-age. If you were a useful member of society, like a device driver, application or games developer, I'm sure we would all be quite happy to ignore your dimwitted ravings and would rush out to buy your fully certified "Designed for Vista" products. However, those of us who do have a measurable IQ don't just go and upgrade our XP systems because some sad little nerd thinks they would look nicer. You need to get a job and get a life. [No doubt I shall be crushed by your eloquent response...]

Vista is a lousy OS
I happily paid for a new Dell XPS 410 with Vista in March. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!! All kinds of incompatabilities. Poor stability, crashes and not responding messages. I will never buy Vista again. I will go MAC first.

XP "competition" for Vista
This discussion has the false premise that Vista's main problem is that it has competition. False. Vista's main problem is that it's a bad product. Full of changes (for example DRM) related to Microsoft further losing the concept that the the OS should be just a tool that does what it's owner (the user) tells it to do instead of the tool bossing the owner around. Their "marketing plan" for Vista is to use their monopoly power to force people to buy it. A sign that the elephant has shot itself, due to it's monopoly power it will take 10 years to die; the sooner the beter.

XP Works!
Why should one stay with XP? Very simple...it works, software runs on it, and there are drivers out there for peripherals. VISTA is still woefully lacking in drivers for peripherals, especially for older ones that work perfectly well. Why should one have to totally replace their hardware and much of their software just to experience VISTA?

This is a surprise?
Hardly surprising really, the hardware requirements for vista are relatively high. Many features and hardware simply aren't supported. Problems with NAS and AD domains we're noticeable when I attempted to roll out a vista machine. Not to mention ridiculous memory requirements (and I thought xp was a memory hog) The constant dialogue boxes and 'enhanced security' serve only to confuse your average user. Vista is all looks and no substance only fan boys and retards are impressed. Completely unsuitable for business use.

Looks aren't everything. XP is reliable....
XP is just the inside of Vista but without the extra "eye candy" and hardware and software incompatibilities. Also running XP you don't have to worry about Redmonds activation servers "going dark" or taking a DDoS and your copy of Vista goes into Reduced Functionality mode. Vista is just another 10 layers added to XP with a new IP stack. That is the only good thing I have to say about Vista is the redesigned TCP/IP stack that is ultra-fast but everything else about Vista is very under-whelming when you are already running XP. To not upgrade just to upgrade is not being lazy it is being both frugal and smart.

Why do we use XP instead of Vista? Because we want to run our applications. An OS is there to enable the applications to do their job, not to run round going "Woohoo! Look what I can do! Aren't I shiny?" and eating system resources like a kid with halloween candy. An OS "upgrade" has to offer something pretty special to compensate for making everything run slower. Vista fails to do so, and in some instances, won't even WORK. But it's ever so SHINY!

Most the people that havent gone fully to Vista is because they use their pcs to the fullest. Vista is quicker and slicker on most MS apps, but I re-installed Vista twice. Once due to vidcard driver issue and I was stuck in an endless boot cycle. The other was when playing any intensive game the vid driver slow the game to a crawl and you get errors forever. To day people do not upgrade to Vista because of their computers is really showing someone how limited your brain works. Put some games and Office on Vista and see what really happens. My system rates a 5.9 in Vista and I can not get the power out of it that I can in XP. I am still dual booted and one day -- year or so later-- I might use Vista as my primary -- but I doubt it at this time.

I dont know why people still use XP...By using XP means that your a lazy low life,have no knowledge of Computers,or it shows how much of a flinstone you are.The reason why alot of people hate vista is because they are tring to install it on slow,Crappy or pcs that dont meet the requirements...Or people who dont read the directions whatsoever....i use vista and i tell you its awsome and attractive. Vista makes XP look Ugly and Stone age..
