Facebook has eased off on new privacy settings that left users friend lists open for viewing.
The company said in a blog posting that it would be changing the settings to allow users to hide some of the friend list data, preventing other Facebook users and outside visitors from viewing friend lists.
"Now when you uncheck the 'Show my friends on my profile' option in the friends box on your profile, your friend list won't appear on your profile regardless of whether people are viewing it while logged into Facebook or logged out," the company explained.
"This information is still publicly available, however, and can be accessed by applications."
User outcry over the new settings began shortly after the changes were initially rolled out by the social networking giant.
While the company hoped that the changes would allow users to have a clearer understanding over their privacy settings and better manage their information, critics argued that the new settings in fact made more user information available to the general public.
The privacy spat is far from the first such issue that has befallen the social networking giant in its quest to generate revenues. In 2007 the company received a scathing response for its proposed " Beacon" advertising platform, and since then the company has also come under fire for the use of polling ads.

facebook privacy
Its all messed up. When I search on my profile in a fake account I see more information than if I click on 'oreview your profile' within my account. Also, hiding the friends from your profile does ensure that it is hidden from the outside world, but it also ensures that it is hidden from my friends also. Stupid updates. Im not happy, so I'll be deactivating my account until they get it right.

well not quite
The change to hide friends list, works different from a computer browser and a smartphone with a facebook app. Because, APPs can still see it all.. It is better that a complete stranger can not see it but when Facebook has inconsistencies like view of friends list being different from computer and cell phone, it should concern us all about all their privacy controls. Additionally, upload a photo to a new album from your iPhone. It is posted for EVERYONE to see with no ability to change it to FRIENDS ONLY on the iPHone. As Facebook development leans toward exposing users data for their business plan purposes, rather than true privacy of the users, holes are bound to be everywhere. There are settings all over that have privacy implications and not just in the Privacy menu.
