Four million UK internet users now subscribe to broadband, according to figures from Ofcom.
The communications regulator said that 3.99 million had subscribed to faster, always-on services by the end of April, with 40,000 making the switch every week.
Broadband's rise was matched by a fall in the number of those connecting to the internet using a dial-up modem.
Ofcom said that 53 per cent of UK adults now have internet access at home, with half of those subscribing to some form of broadband service.
The percentage of those using dial-up fell from 73 to 66 per cent in the same period.
