Motorola has launched a new Wi-Fi access point which it claims can improve network coverage without the lengthy installation required for traditional access points (APs).

The AP 6511 WallPlate AP uses in-wall CAT5/6 cabling to reduce the need to pull cables or drill holes, and is powered by Motorola's Wi-NG operating system.

Andrew Peters, director of product marketing for wireless LAN at Motorola, explained that the requirement for Wi-Fi has been growing all the time but that installation can be awkward.

"With many hotels and other similar enterprises having the cabling in the walls in the room, the use of an access point like this enables them to far more easily and simply install a network point to provide customers with Wi-Fi," he said.

Daran Hermans, product manager at Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions, added that the WallPlate operates in a modular way, meaning that customers can add a three-port Ethernet snap-on switch to run other services through the product, such as IPTV.

The AP 6511 could also act as a radio frequency scanner for up to 10 access points in a location, adding another benefit for smaller firms.

"For SMEs this is ideal as many can't justify the expense of a dedicated scanner, but still want to maintain control over their networks. By giving the WallPlate this functionality we can offer another service for users," said Hermans.

The AP 6511 will be available worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2010 when it will begin testing in beta, and will retail for $379 (£255).

Ruckus Wireless announced a high-speed Wi-Fi wall switch yesterday also aimed at the hotel space, underlining growing competition in the Wi-Fi market.
