Video entertainment giant Nintendo is to focus on improving the games available for its consoles rather than the games systems themselves, according to its new president.

Speaking in his first week as the boss of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata said he would focus the company on making better games so that the GameCube console could compete more effectively with arch-rivals Sony Playstation2 and Microsoft Xbox.

"We can't be optimistic about the game market. No matter what great product you come up with, people get bored," he said. "I feel like a chef cooking for a king who's full."

Nintendo has given the world video legends such as Super Mario, Donkey Kong and Pokémon.

Iwata took control this week from retiring president Hiroshi Yamauchi, who quit after 52 years at the helm.
