The iPhone 4 supply problems show no sign of abating

The iPhone frenzy continued apace today, after demand for the device outstripped supply on the high street.

V3.co.uk went to a selection of retailers along Oxford Street in central London to find out how sales were going, including Carphone Warehouse, O2, Orange, Phones4U and Vodafone.

Carphone Warehouse said that it had sold its allocated stock of 75 units by 3pm yesterday, and that it expected fresh deliveries on Monday or Tuesday for contract-only customers.

The sales representative added that Carphone Warehouse is unlikely to start selling the device on a pay-as-you-go basis for at least two months.

Phones4U had similar news, saying that it had sold 40 of the latest iPhones and expected stock soon.

Orange and Vodafone were also sold out, but could not say when fresh stock would arrive.

The O2 store was the only one with the device available, and there were around 20 customers queuing outside for the new smartphone.

One customer said that he had been there for an hour and a half and still hadn't made it inside, but had been told by staff that he would get one.

The O2 web site has a stock locator on its site, allowing users to see which stores have an iPhone available.

Staff at the T-Mobile store told V3.co.uk that they expect to start selling the iPhone in mid-July, although no official announcement has yet been made.

None of the stores had a white iPhone in stock, highlighting the continued supply problems with this model.

Apple said in a statement that white models of the iPhone 4 will now ship at the end of July, adding to the frustration users are experiencing at not being able to get their hands on the device.

The white version of the device has apparently been "more challenging to manufacture than expected", according to the firm.

V3.co.uk asked Apple to elaborate on this, but the manufacturer said that it had nothing more to add.

Apple has continued to play down the shortage of supply, pointing out that availability of the "more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected".
