Microsoft's much-hyped Windows 7 was released this week, and has proved a hit with V3.co.uk readers, over 40 per cent of whom plan to upgrade to the new operating system.
Our Windows 7 upgrade poll also showed that a further nine per cent will upgrade once the first service pack is released, but a fairly sizeable 15 per cent said that the upgrade costs are too prohibitive to consider a move.
One reader, Jeff Owen, said: "I have many programs and hardware that will not work with Vista and presumably Windows 7 that I do not wish to lose in any upgrade. I have five PCs all working OK with XP, so any changes will be very expensive."
Another, A. Webster, commented that, even though Windows 7 appears to be the next step, "with the admission that Vista is not as good as XP why would anyone spend even more cash?".
The poll revealed that, despite the hype, 12 per cent of V3.co.uk readers are happy with their current operating system and plan to skip this release.
"It's all very well all the techno savvy saying they will upgrade to Windows 7, however I guess for the vast bulk of computer users the new OS will be of little interest as people will only upgrade to Win7 if they happen to buy a new PC," wrote James Beaumont.
"I bought a new PC last year with Vista to replace an XP machine, I have a laptop which still runs 98SE - but it does all I want it to do. I won't be upgrading to Win7, my computers are working fine as they are."
Another, Niall Edwards, said that XP still has most of the core functionality he needs. "I haven't delved too deeply into Windows 7 yet, but it seems to offer lots of frills that I neither want nor need," he added.
Nine per cent of readers said that they use open source, while eight per cent indicated that they are switching to Macs.

Cheap at my price!!!
I work at my local further education college and consequently have an academic email address. So I got W7 for £30! Would I have still been using my old op system if I'd had to pay £150? - Too bloody right, I would.

Upgrade are always doubtful, but WINDOWS 7 ROCKS!!! people will love it
But if you think about what your getting. Dude Windows has DDR built into it, A Media Center, A Web Server, Multi Touch Support right out of the Box, Movie Maker, DVD Studio, and a host of other things that Have been around for years in XP but are now beautifully executed under one hood. I HAVE INSTALLED WINDOWS 7 on my Fujitsu Lifebook u820 AND IT RUNS WONDERFULLY end of story.

Too expensive for me
I run a very small IT business and I bought approx. 10 laptops last years all running Vista. Vista has not impressed me at all due to its sluggish response and eternal time wasting. I would love to upgrade to Windows 7 but the cost is simply too prohibitive. Microsoft is simply ripping us Vista sufffering customers off.

Windows 7 Not worth It
Until recently I was running Windows vista ultimate decided to upgrade to Windows 7 when it came out. As usual with Microsoft systems the hardware needs to play catch up. My television card stopped working no Windows 7 driver available, several 32 bit programmes which were working under Vista ceased to work and worst of all I didnt notice any increase in speed or efficiency over Vista. I suggest all of you thinking of upgrading wait a couple of years for the updates and hardware to catch up before spending a large amount of cash on something that just isnt worth it.
