Sony's PlayStation 3 has gone on sale for £550 on the Play.com website.
The next-generation games console is available to pre-order, with an expected shipping date of 15 November 2006.
However, in a move that is guaranteed to draw in eager gamers, Play.com is warning customers that there may not be enough consoles to go around.
"Due to an expected European shortage of the PS3, we are unable to guarantee delivery of your PS3 before Christmas," the listing said.
"All pre-orders will be fulfilled on a first come, first served basis and game titles in this package may be changed, subject to availability."
The price quoted on the site is also higher than the expected £425, although Play.com is listing the version with a 60GB hard drive.

£550!!!!
I agree £550 is a lot of money , also you have to be able to buy £50 a game from then on. The games are going to have to be close to perfect. Metal gear solid 4 is the only game so far that truly looks "Next-Gen". Also i expect for £550 - No Slowdown 60fps at 480 720 1080.. Etc etc - No! stutters (Frame lags) Not with a 60Gb HD built in , If they don't use Hd to catche data then frame stutters bound to happen (Look at Xbox360 - No V-sync and Jumpy games). But if PS3 does everything right then £550 is worth it.

Didn't read it all.
Play.com is also selling the PlayStation 3 with 3 games, which would normally set you back £50 each, totalling £575; PLAY.COM IS SAVING YOU £25

Do U Know Anything?
Dont U Know That Each BluRay Disk drive costs £2000 so initially Sony will be on a huge loss. Its A Bargain.

The 550 pound price is with 3 games! Not only the 60gb version.

prices
in response to the person saying they are making a proffit they are taking a loss on the console sales, they make their money on the games, the blueray drive alone in the PS3 is worth more than the price of the console.

Gamer since 1985
£550?? What a joke, both Sony and its suppliers are cashing in on naive gamers/traders who WRONGLY assume they can sell on notoriously expensive consoles at a reasonable profit. Come Christmas this PS3 won?t be *much* better than the Xbox360 however it's commanding twice the price!

Mistaken
If you look carefully on the site it says PS3 and 3 Games. The games on the site are valued at about £50. So 3 multiplied by 50 equals 150. Subtract that from 550 equals £400. I conclude by saying the price is still £425 and play is allowing people to save £25 by selling it as a bundle.

Price
The price of the ps3 is so high due to the sony blue ray player. The rest of the hardware is close to the xbox 360 but still better. Microsoft will be selling an hd-dvd addon for the 360 which at minimum is going to cost another $200, Bringing the total cost of the 360 plus the hd-dvd addon to close to the same price or higher than the ps3.
