Sony has issued a firmware upgrade for its Playstation Portable handheld games platform.
The new software includes a LocationFree Player, which allows users to watch TV or videos on the PSP.
When used in conjunction with a Sony LocationFree Base Station (sold separately), users can access their home TV and movies from their PSP across the internet.
Copy protection has been added to allow licensed vendors to provide copyright on Memory Stick Duo storage devices. Other improvements include the retention of form data, and an option to synchronise date and time settings via the internet.
However, the new features are only available for models bought in the US and Japan. "This update is for customers who own PSP system model number PSP-1001 sold in Japan and North America," said Sony.
"Do not update your PSP system through this website if you own a different model of the PSP system. There is no guarantee of proper operation with other models of the PSP system."
No formal date has been given for the European upgrade, but it may not be available until next spring. British users who bought their hardware early via the grey market should be able to upgrade.

don't do it
Problem is, if you do upgrade then you cannot use any of the non-Sony approved 3rd party software of which there is tons of useful apps (including a fresh email client I found). My advice is stay on version 1.5 firmware until the latest version is cracked.
