Nokia slaps Apple with another patent suit

Nokia claims the iPhone uses its speech and data transmission technologies

Nokia is taking legal action against Apple, claiming that the firm's iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe on five Nokia patents relating to enhanced speech and data transmission.

The complaint has been filed in the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, which is known for holding patent trials more quickly than in other courts, according to Nokia.

"Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices," said Paul Melin, Nokia patent licensing general manager.

"We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development, and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation. "

This is not the first time that Nokia has sued Apple over its iPhone technology. The company launched legal proceedings against its smartphone rival in October last year, claiming that the iPhone's screen, encryption and security breach 10 Nokia patents.

Nokia also filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission last year, claiming that the iPhone infringed seven of its patents.

Apple has remained quiet on all the Nokia claims, but has filed its own countersuit claiming infringement of 13 patents.
