VeriSign looks to be expanding its horizons since its acquisition by Symantec

VeriSign has launched a Domain Name System (DNS) management service for what it sees as an underserved market.

The company said that it will expand its enterprise service offering into the DNS space, allowing businesses to move from their own DNS servers into a managed proprietary VeriSign system.

Ben Petro, senior vice president of network intelligence and availability at VeriSign, told V3.co.uk that the company is looking to establish a presence in the market for DNS management.

"The space simply has not filled out. There are just a handful of small organisations that have addressed what is a very large challenge," he said. " What used to be a small market is now a very large market."

VeriSign's work with the .com and .net domains, as well as security initiatives such as DNSSec, makes it well-equipped to enter the commercial market, according to Petro.

"All day long we manage massive zones of domain names and data," he said. " Now it's a matter of extending that same capability to users."

VeriSign has just completed a $1.28bn sale of its identity and authentication business to Symantec in an attempt to better focus on infrastructure services.

Petro said that, much like VeriSign's other infrastructure services such as its DDoS tracker, the managed DNS service will attempt to monetise security services and tools that the company developed for in-house security.

"What you feel around the halls is that we are back to our roots. We are focused on DNS," he said. "Growing up in that environment, we learned how to defend ourselves."
