Virgin Trains will be launching a Wi-Fi data service on its high-speed trains from next year.
The service will be supplied by Nomad Digital using a series of trackside wireless base stations.
Customers on West Coast Main Line routes will be the first to take advantage of the service, which promises a high-speed connection using WiMax that also works in tunnels and underground.
"We already offer Wi-Fi access in our first class lounges, at-seat mobile charging points and laptop power points," said Laura Hirdman, new product development manager at Virgin Trains.
"Now with onboard internet, working travellers can carry on with business by staying connected while in transit.
"All passengers can take advantage of online pursuits like news, shopping, emailing friends and family, or downloading their favourite songs and videos."
Graeme Lowdon, chief executive and co-founder of Nomad Digital, added: " Virgin Trains is determined to help passengers make their travel time productive and enjoyable, and we can enable that to happen in a variety of ways.
"This is an area where rail travel really scores over other forms of transport. It is very exciting to be working with Virgin on this."
