Google has launched Google Maps 5.0 for Android, promising 3D interactive features and offline reliability that could help improve mobile workers’ productivity.

The major update to the popular mapping tool is the way the map appears on a user’s screen.

Hitherto, Google Maps downloaded as a set of small square images tied together, but version 5.0 sees Google using vector graphics to draw the map dynamically as it is being used, according to product manager Michael Siliski.

The new 3D map display allows users to tilt the map by dragging two fingers down the screen, rotate the view by twisting with two fingers, for example to view the other side of a building, and zoom more smoothly.

A compass mode has also been included to help users orientate themselves more easily.

Thanks to the dynamic drawing technology which requires 100 times less data to display maps, the latest version will automatically cache large areas on a user’s device based on the places they visit most, when plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi, Siliski added.

This means the tool can even be used offline, while offline rerouting functionality will reroute a user if they miss a turn even if their internet connection goes down, he said.

“These new features are just the first steps in maximising dynamic map drawing technology to create a faster, more interactive experience where efficiency really matters: mobile devices,” he concluded.

“For example, we estimate that viewing maps now requires almost 70 per cent less mobile network data overall than before.”
