The State of New York is planning to ban people using iPods while crossing the road in an effort to reduce accidents.
The proposed legislation was introduced by State Senator Carl Kruger to combat what he refers to as "iPod oblivion". So far the legislation is only proposed for larger cities in the state.
"We are talking about people walking around 'tuned in' and, in the process of being tuned in, being 'tuned out' to the world around them," Senator Kruger told TV station WCBS.
"They are walking into speeding cars. They are walking into buses. They are walking into one another and it is creating a number of fatalities that have been documented right here in New York City."
Kruger urged iPod users to limit their activities to parks and benches, and to avoid endangering themselves and others by crossing streets while listening to music.
But the legislation has provoked an angry response from some New York residents.
"It is not a distraction," said one iPod-wearing woman. "You have your iPod in your ears and you're crossing the street. You are looking with your eyes. You don't have to hear anything, really ... I guess."
Smoking indoors and food outlets selling trans-fatty acids are also banned in New York.

#1 on the "Top Ten Reasons Not to Go to New York City"
What. The. Hell...? ithink this is one of the more random acts of legislature passed in New York City, if not THE most random. It is not a matter of stupidity on the part of the victim as much as it is a lack of common sense. If you are living in a major metropolitan area, you should probably have it in your mind that there are other people in the world and they, for the most part, are not greatly concerned for your well-being. If you step out into traffic without looking and you get hit, it's on you; not the corporation producing the product or the driver whose front bumper you've dented by way of your self-induced obliviousness. It really boils down to the fact that the music a person is listening to, no matter how loud, does not blur their vision or cloud their judgement much like the methamphetamines, random street junk, and narcotics which the NYC law makers and enforcers SHOULD be concerned with. It astounds me that I'm even bothering to write this... I just couldn't wrap my head around the idea of limiting a person's autonomy by way of banning iPods of all things.

Darwin is spinning in his grave
What? If both ways adequately before crossing the street, then that's their loss. Why are there proposals to protect the idiots of the world, punishing others who follow the rules? Also, why just ipods? Many others use other music players asides from them, such as CD players and many other brands of media players. If you're going to ban listening to music while "crossing roads", ban them ALL. Sheesh.

HELLO.
Will this ever end. Why not fine people for not looking both ways before they cross. We can't keep protecting people from their own stupidity - it is an affront to evolution.
