Dell has announced that its Android-based Streak tablet will be available in the UK in early June through O2.
The 5in device includes built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G, and is designed to let users update social networking pages in real time, and access applications such as email, text and instant messaging.
"The spacious 5in screen is ideal for experiencing thousands of Android Market widgets, games and applications, all without squinting or compromising portability," said Dell in a blog post.
The Streak uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset and 1GHz processor, and supports upgrades including Adobe Flash 10.1 on Android 2.2. It offers direct access to services such as Google Maps and the Android apps marketplace.
"The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smartphones and larger-screen tablets," said Ron Garriques, president of Dell's Communication Solutions Group.
"Its unique size provides people with new ways to enjoy, connect and navigate their lives."
The Streak has a multi-touch display, a 5-megapixel camera and 2GB of internal storage expandable to 32GB.
Pricing and data plan information will be released later.

5 inch display is...
... well, how can I say this and be polite? It's too darned small. Anyone creating a device of this size is competing against established devices that have far more functionality (phones). It's not different enough to stand out and it's not big enough to read or browse comfortably on. It may be a nice gadget but it'll die from disinterest if it isn't really cheap. If it was perhaps 8" then it would fit nicely between netbook and phone, be small enough to put in a coat pocket, just big enough to use for browsing and emails. Now THAT would be useful (all opinions are of course subjective). I have boxes of "must have" gadgets, Psion II, MP3 players, Blue-Tooth earpieces, old phones etc etc. I'm all gadgetted out now and won't buy unless it is genuinely useful. This looks like an executive toy that executives won't want. The only good point is it runs Android. Basically it is tat. I don't think anyone should plan on retiring from the sales. My suggestion: Get your design team to look at some of the electronic photo frames and pick one that is a nice then redesign the Streak in that size and that is actually useful and fits properly between netbook and phone. That is where the market is and it is pretty obvious. Something with a screen the size of a paperback book would be ideal (for reading too!). I was quite refrained in this posting. -Most- unusual. :-)
