Yahoo Europe is looking for a new managing director, following Fabiola Arrendondo's surprise announcement that she is leaving the portal provider to "pursue private business interests".

Arrendondo, who joined Yahoo Europe in 1997 as its first boss, is believed to have made her decision to leave at the end of last year, but she is expected to stay with the organisation for another couple of months.

The move is a surprising one given Yahoo Europe's success to date. For the fourth quarter of 2000, it generated sales of $22.1m, up from $11.8m in the year ago quarter, and boasted 31 million unique users compared with 18 million at the end of 1999.

Arrendondo had previously forecast that 2001 would be a tough year for the industry, however.
