EMC has announced new deduplication capabilities

EMC has added further integration between products in its backup portfolio, and is to offer extended support for Microsoft, Oracle and IBM environments.

The vendor's NetWorker software will now provide source-based de-duplication following its integration with software acquired when EMC bought Avamar in 2006.

Source-based data deduplication takes place on the client where the data is located, as opposed to target-based data deduplication, which takes place after the data has reached the backup device. EMC argues that the source-based method requires less storage and enables a faster backup process.

NetWorker will also now support Microsoft SharePoint Server, Exchange Server and SQL Server, as well as Oracle databases, while the latest version of Avamar will support Microsoft SharePoint Server and IBM Lotus Domino.

EMC has also launched NetWorker Fast Start, a package solution aimed at midsized environments. The backup software contains similar features to Networker 7.5, but has push install capabilities that speed and simplify deployments.

"Deduplication is a feature of a comprehensive backup environment, and EMC is delivering these innovative capabilities in all types of use cases, whether as standalone products or tightly integrated solutions," said Mark Sorenson, EMC storage software vice president.

"There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to backup environments, which is why EMC offers such an extensive portfolio of solutions that can be mixed and matched to provide the right recovery time and recovery point objectives."

EMC has made new software available for its Disk Library 1500 and 3000 models to increase their performance, as well as integrating the software with the company's Data Protection Advisor to allow IT administrators to improve management and analysis of the Disk Library environment.

The Disk Library now contains NetWorker path-to-tape and replication support, OpenStorage API Support for Symantec Veritas NetBackup, as well as API support for Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) optimised deduplication, which provides up to a 300 per cent increase in deduplication ratios, EMC said.
