OpenSolaris is the open-source version of Sun's Solaris platform

Sun Microsystems has announced availability of the latest OpenSolaris update, which adds a new snapshot feature, boosts performance, and is easier to deploy in datacentres, according to the vendor.

OpenSolaris is an open-source version of Sun's Unix-based Solaris platform, and the latest 2008.11 release adds a tool called TimeSlider that makes use of the ZFS file system to create instant backups based on snapshots. It features a graphical interface that makes it easy for any user to take advantage of this feature, Sun said.

For datacentre deployments, a new Automated Installer application allows users to choose the packages that are included within the Distro Constructor installation web service. This lets customers create their own custom image for deployment.

Sun also announced two new support subscription plans for companies deploying OpenSolaris commercially. OpenSolaris Production offers 24-hour support with a one-hour response time for priority calls, while OpenSolaris Essential is a lower cost option using online and email-based support.

US customers will also be able to purchase OpenSolaris pre-installed on some laptops early in 2009, thanks to a partnership between Sun and Toshiba. The companies did not say whether this scheme will be extended to other territories.

OpenSolaris 2008.11 is available for download here.
