Apple has broken its silence in the face of growing anger from consumers about faults in its iPod Nano music player.
Launched earlier this month the Nano is the replacement for the iPod Mini and is exceptionally small and light. But users have complained that the screens are very easy to scratch and crack, and have raised doubts about battery performance.
Apple is claiming that the screen problems occurred with one particular batch of Nanos that suffered a manufacturing flaw affecting "less than one-tenth of one per cent" of its stock.
Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple, said: "This is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units.
"We have received very few calls from customers reporting this problem. We do not think this is a widespread issue."
Nanos from this batch will be replaced free of charge. Schiller insisted that the screens were made with the same material as the iPod Minis, about which Apple claims to have received no complaints.
Matthew Peterson, a Nano owner who set up a website to track complaints, said: "This was a real issue and most people tried to ignore it.
"I know a lot of people are going to complain that they still have to spend extra money on a case to prevent scratching. I guess I can handle using an iPod sock on my Nano knowing that I can look at my screen and show someone a picture. "

Scratches are the LEAST of it!!!
The COUNTLESS scratches on my brand new IPOD nano are NOTHING compared to the new problem. My 3 week old nano looks five years old from the scratches. But that's NOTHING. I want the thing to WORK. And now it doesn't. :( I gotta dig up my receipt and I'm returning it. I want a BRAND NEW one. I'm not tolerating them telling me they're going to "fix" it either. Today on the bus it slipped off my leg and fell to the floor. Not a big fall AT ALL. Very slight. And yet, now it's BROKEN. The ipod is permanently on LOCK mode. I have to press the hold button VERY hard to get it to unlock and then it only unlocks for a split second. I'm really disgusted and heartbroken too. It was a gift that I enjoyed listening to very much on the bus. I love the lightweight, compact device. I resigned myself to the incredible number of scratches. My focus was on the great sound. But for this product to break like this from a simple, light fall is just not right. I want a BRAND NEW one. But the gift was purchased online at the Apple Store. I fear weeks of bureacracy and b.s. before I'll have a new one. If people will file a class-action lawsuit over something so TRIVIAL as a cosmetic issue, I ask that you consider in the lawsuit the fact that it will BREAK if it simply falls a few inches to the floor. Now THAT is a reason for a class-action lawsuit.

Its Ridiculous!
i honestly think i would have been better off spending two hundred dollars on something else better than an ipod nano. The first one i had, the screen was messed up, brought it back, they replaced it...second one, i go to turn it on the next day, and the damn thing freezes, i wonder how many ipods i will go through within the year of my warranty. Is any one else having the same issues, or do i just have bad luck with ipod nanos?

do not touch!!! will get scratched!!
My partner purchased an ipod nano for me and within hours it had numerous scratches which i could not explain as i did not have anything to scratch with!!!! Unbelievable!! This is obviously not just "one particular batch". It seems they are all flawed. I will be contacting Apple immediately after reading the amount of complaints.

Battery performance
I sincerely feel that something needs to be done about the battery. Cracks can be taken care of by using a case...but my iPod nano sucks battery like hell. I charge it almost everyday, just to listen to an hour or 2 of music!!!

Prevent screen scratching until you get a case
THis is what I'm doing with my iopd nano: I cut half of the protective plastic sheet thingy off, (same thing that is on all electronic screens when you first buy them) and left the other half on the screen area. This will keep the screen scratch free until I get a case.

Re: Be realistic
So simply because every single iPod model has had a problem with the screen, then we should all just accept the fact? No, if it's always been a problem, then perhaps they should fix it...no other MP3 player seems to suffer from the problem so why does the iPod.

Class-Action to follow...
Apple is minimizing the scratching problem. I bought my nano 4 days after they were released and after one day of use commuting (keeping the nano in my silk-lined suit pocket), my nano had several scratches and blemishes to the plastic front and chromed back. I have since coddled it like a baby and it still manages to get scratched. Apple suggests that we should have gotten a case for our nano...although, they haven't even made them available yet. Their own tagline is "1,000 songs IN YOUR POCKET." People wouldn't put up with a car that peels paint as you drive down the highway - and they shouldn't stand for this manufacturing flaw either. I can almost guarantee that there will be a class-action suit filed - which is usually the only way to get Apple to respond appropriately. Finally, if you don't have a nano, you shouldn't respond to this post. I've read dozens of posts from non-nano owners stating that we're making a big deal out of nothing...which is a completely ignorant stance to take.

Be Realistic
The iPod has always scratched easily -- going back to the very first version. That's why they sell covers and carrying cases for them. This is not a "flaw" but a fact.

It is a FLAW
Why do you think something can be a fact but not a flaw? It is both a fact and a flaw. You fanboys can accept the flaw as fact, but there are people who are not willing to accept it as just a fact. Saying that this scratching problem existed from the first genereration ipod does not mean it is not a flaw. This is a flaw and can be fixed.

It's two factors
The popularity of the BLACK iPod Nano is ONE reason for these complaints. It just scratches more easily (or more visibly). The second reason is the SIZE.It practically BEGS to be shoved into a pocket (as they showed in their marketing), or put in an otherwise small space. Putting a bulky cover on it seems like (at least in part) defeating the purpose and the beauty of the Nano which is it's thinness and ease of storage. A case retards it's ability to slide into tight areas.
