Apple has a unique advantage in controlling the operating system and hardware platform

Apple's recent unveiling of iLife '06, the latest release of its suite of digital content creation tools, demonstrates that the firm is making the most of its control of the hardware and underlying software in its systems, industry experts have observed.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs described in his Macworld keynote speech how Apple is wringing every possible benefit from its unique advantage in controlling the operating system and the hardware platform, Gartner analyst Mike McGuire noted.

"This control means that Apple can seamlessly integrate disparate but related applications, such as audio, photo and video editing tools," said McGuire.

"Many companies compete with Apple in individual applications, but none can integrate multiple applications into such an easy-to-use and powerful set of digital media tools."

ILife '06, which runs on the latest version of the Mac OS, OSX 10.4.4, is a digital media suite that includes iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iChat, iWeb, iPhoto and GarageBand, a consumer-oriented music creation and editing system.

Several of the core iLife applications have also been enhanced with the latest release of the suite.

IPhoto has been boosted with more refined post-production effects and can manage a library of up to 250,000 photos. A syndication tool enabled with RSS has been added to allow consumers to publish photos from their .Mac accounts.

GarageBand has been beefed up with the addition of hundreds of loops of instruments playing simple chords, which users can splice together with their own music.

A podcaster has been added to iChat which allows users to record an interview with a subject, edit it, add music and push one button to publish it.

The newest addition to the suite, iWeb, allows online publishing of web pages containing blogs, podcasts, photo slide shows and playlists of music purchased from the iTunes store.
