HP claims the first Shanghai workstation

HP has updated its workstations with models using AMD's latest quad-core Opteron, codenamed Shanghai.

The company has added new models to its HP xw9400 line using the new 45nm version of the Opteron processor, which was officially launched earlier this month.

HP claims to be the first vendor with a workstation based on the chip, which offers a boost in performance without increasing power consumption.

The xw9400 is described as ideal for high-end workstation applications such as engineering, 3D digital content creation and video editing.

Sue Forkin, senior category manager for workstations in the UK and Ireland at HP, said that the vendor would continue pushing the envelope of high performance while allowing for low levels of power consumption.

Prices for the HP xw9400 workstation models with the new Opteron processor start at £1,379.
