A US media monitoring group has issued a "nationwide parental alert" after hidden pornographic scenes were found in the popular game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The organisation, National Institute on the Media and the Family, issued the warning after it was revealed that a software modification allows players to see pornographic scenes contained in the game.
Further reading
The modification is called 'Hot Coffee' and was created by Patrick Wildenborg, 36, from the Netherlands. He claims that the modification adds nothing illegal to the game and merely allows users to see what is already written into the code.
"If Rockstar Games denies that, then they're lying and I will be able to prove that," said Patrick Wildenborg, mod author, in a email to Associated Press.
"My mod does not introduce anything to the game. All the content that is shown was already present on the DVD."
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is one of the most controversial games of all time. In order to take part players must steal cars, deliver drugs and use prostitutes. There have been calls for it to be banned in some US states.
"It should be clear to everyone by now that video games do influence young people," said Dr David Walsh, author of the best selling book on teenage brain development, Why Do They Act That Way?.
"Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas never belonged in the hands of kids. We are taking the unusual step of alerting parents to the pornography available through this game to any child or teen who is internet savvy."

Meh.. old news.
So the idea is to ignore the violence, edit out sexual scenes and then wonder why our children grew up to be sexually obsessive. If people reacted positively towards sex, we might just have well-adjusted teens for a change. God forbid.

i do not understand this culture!?!?!
These games are based apon bloody apathetic violence, fun i admit as a gamer. But it is not natural human behavior. sexual/intimate relations is normal and passive/procrative,(ie. normal) The outrage should focus on violence and its impact on dealing with fearful, or defencive behavior. Sex is ok all around the would...except in the usa."band in america" goes against all of or freedom of speach and expresion ideas. What a backwards culture we live in. kill/maim/torture. but dont kiss or taste a lover..F'ed up...

It is a HACK
This is a MODIFICATION to the game. You have to HACK the code to gain access. Many game developers LEAVE code in to the actual game, but make it inacessable. They like doing this because its easy to take out code this way. It is not big deal, and the thing has gone way too far. Some modder could have made the same thing without even accessing rockstars code in the first place. If you do not believe me that other games have this leftover code, just look at the halo (xbox) modding scene.

This is stupid, its not a big deal. I saw the video. I dont see why there is an alert. The content in the video is the same content in the Sex Shop (Las Venturas)actually, the sex shop is worse. Im 14 and I dont play the game that much, but the content in the game is worse than the content in the sex minigame...

It doesnt Matter
Thank you for notifying me about this terrible sex scene that you all have been talking about, San Andreas isn't so great anymore it's awesome! My parents bought me the game knowing that it will be this bad. So i think you should calm down Dr. Phil and let Rockstar Games right their wrong by making a Grand Theft Auto in Montreal. Salut bonjour la visite

I agree.
Zain, I agree with you if they want to take this off the markets then they should all M+ games such as Driv3r I've found content on the game when I was glitching and on true crime, some content in the strip club and i know how to get in.

I'll make this quick. I think a majority of us need to lighten up on the matter. Plus, the game is pretty fun. Taking the game off the shelves is a little much I think. Like I said, lighten up.

it says clearly on the front of the box in big letters rated M for MATURE if u dont like it dont buy it. And what is the deal it is for adults not for kids, dont hate the game hate the parents who buy the game.

word from the kid
I am 14 years old and i play the grand theft auto series quite a bit. I haven't even in the least bit ever had the erge or thought to kill anyone or pick a up prostitute or do anything that is in the game. I have never heard of a case where the kid was influensed by a video game to do something bad. it sounds to me that the parents dont want to admit that they are bad parents and want something to blame it on

Worst Parents Ever
I viewed the Grand Theft Auto without the porn. The mindless violence systemic to this game should, all by itself, be reason enough to keep it out of the hands of any kid. Those so-called "parents" who allow their own children to play this game are either oblivious idiots or simply a lower form of life. There is no third possibility. My mongrel dog possesses more dignity, if not more intelligence. These worthless bums should have their kids taken from them. The children would be better off in an orphanage or with foster parents. I own this game on PC and On ps2 BOTH say right on the box M 17+ STRONG SEXUAL CONTENT. If that parent had not wanted her child exposed to adult content...she shouldnt have bought the game.

So people want to ban this game because it has violence and sex, because, that's really going to solve the world's problems. people say "this should be banned because it's against our Christian rights"... not everyone has the same religion. If you want to see a place where religion dicatates everything, move to Saudi Arabia, or Iran. This is America. and people aren't going to stop playing this game because it's against YOUR religion!

One world
I'm not necessarily referring to this one issue but we all live in the same world and there comes a point where we cannot continue to act as if we are islands. There is a point where we have to take a wider responsibility. It's not easy, but sometimes we should not allow say some parents to abdicate their responsibilities.
Posted by: jas 14 Jul 2005
Yeah, THIS is the reason kids can find porn.
Look, if a kid has the internet savvy to download and install a mod that adds a crude and incomplete intercourse minigame to his M-rated game, he definately has the ability to find REAL pornography of a far more explicit nature on the internet, in minutes, for free. The real issue is that many parents mistakenly believe their children will not PURSUE pornography, and will only experience it if it is thrust upon them by an evil media conglomerate. Who's REALLY being naive?

video games do not raise your kids you do
it seems today everyone is looking for a scape goat no matter what you do kids will find a way. you can not blame the game creators ther is so much crap on television that is so negative like desprate housewives for instance but that gets nothing bur rave reviews and 15 emmy nominations that show has murder, suicide, adultry, theft bad ass kids ect. but i dont hear to many complpaints about that. nothing replaces raising your own children and monitoring what they do but you can not blame the game creators.

fools
Has anyone pushing for this game to be banned, not because of the violence, but because of the sex mod, even considered for a moment the lengths that one has to go to in order to access this material? Somehow the word "unlock" apparently means the same thing as the act of altering and recompiling the raw game code. It's like chastising the police for not having enough locks on a prison.

The game rating is not for minors
Yadda yadda yadda. Games are evil and drive people to violence etc!! Who really cares if there are hidden nude scenes. The game has a rating that is unsuitable for minors. If parents allow them to play the game, that is their responsibility and no-one elses! Perhaps the parental group should issue advise on how to be better parents, know what is going on in their childrens lives and have a better relationship with their children! Then these problems would not arise. The problem these days is nobody wants to admit their wrong or accept the blame. All the emphasis is on the cause and not the symptoms. The blind lead the blind and like sheep people follow!

Blame lies with parents not Rockstar
Does anyone else see the irony in parents being up in arms about scenes inappropriate to children in an 'M' rated game that kids should not be playing in the first place? I'm a 22 year old male and have grown up with games. My mother, when I was a child, would never let me play games she deemed inappropriate and that was that. This blame lays solely with the parents. I am old enough to play a game with any material I feel I can handle. No kids should not play this game this is why it is rated 'M'. This is strictly the parents fault for letting their children play in the first place.

Well, it is a bit more than a naked sims mod...
Although it is not high def porn, it is certainly far more graphic than anything I have ever seen in a video game, and also interactive. I do think the other reader was right in that this game really already earned an adult rating with its violent criminal content. The graphic sexual content just cements that.

Violent Games
We allow our kids to see ever increasing forms of violence on TV,in movies and on video games and we just expect they will grow up okay? Dream on. The effects are already making themselves known, but hey, we can always deny it right? These games should be outlawed as they simply make crime look "normal" which it isn't. The music industry is doing it too. Listen to the lyrics of your kids songs. Is that what you want them to hear? But yet we give them awards and call them "Artists". Time to go back 20 years people, and take control.

I could never understand...
...How the great American freedom loving and defending government and 'so called' public interest groups are always so concerned about sheltering everyone's eyes (including adults) from any form of nudity or sexual act regardless how tame... (or even 'swearing' for that matter) Meanwhile anyone (including a child) anywhere can turn to any channel on TV and watch someone's head get blown off, or get sliced and diced - on regular TV - (especially the oh so graphic NEWS) available 24 hours a day on cable. ...hmmmmm... death and murder ok to show on TV anytime anywhere... That must mean that's good and therefore ok.

Puritannical Morons
Woopdedoo, so there is porn hidden in GTA, that is so much easier to get to than anywhere else on the Internet, or public libraries for that matter. Shame on the parents who should be teaching their kids about sex so it's not such a taboo subject, and shame on the media for making such a production about this. Thanks to the media this game will sell even more copies. Hmmm.

It's Pretty Lame
It's good for a laugh for a few minutes. Nothing more. It's kind of funny to see how people are reacting to the sex of the game when you're already able to kill people in it.

Why is Sex Suddenly such a Problem?
Gratuitous violence, drug dealing, theft... you name it! Grand Theft Auto has it all... or has it? Now we find there are "hidden" explicit sexual scenes buried into the code... finally to be "unlocked" by some European script kiddy. Wow... and now, we have the religious right, all up in arms railing about the evils of the game. The sheer hypocrisy of these people is breathtaking... the "moral majority" as they are called somehow accept all the stylized gratuitous violence and crime as somehow "acceptable", just as it is on television, but show a little skin and these conservative hypocrites suddenly go into convulsions of indignation and revulsion. The sex is the least of it..

Hidden porn steals show for Grand Theft Auto
thanks to this news article, i will now look for this mod to unlock to code when i play the game. your reporting is a double edged sword. while on the one hand you want to protect, but speaking about this and making it public, is making even more people aware of whats out there for this game. you would have been better serving and protecting the public by being quiet.

As if "internet savvy" kids need this mod to see porn...
Parents need to know that if their kid knows more about the internet than they do, they CAN GET PORN. What's with the panic all of a sudden? If your kid has this game, be glad he's watching the porn scene and not gunning down cops or carjacking people...

Oh no! Let's all disregard the whole point of the game: To beat up/kill people and take their money. Instead, let's focus on some HIDDEN/NON-ACCESSABLE area of the game that features probably the most natural non-violent act in human nature: Sex. Where's the real news?

Uh, how is this a concern to parents? This game is already rated M for mature, that means its not for your kids in the first place. How about we have the parents act like parents and properly monitor your kids instead of trying to get the village to do it for you.
Posted by: Reby 11 Jul 2005
Sigh ...
Instead of blaming the industry that creates these adult games, why not focus your attention on the real problem: parents who don't take responsibility for their children's activities. This game is already rated "M". If it's in the hands of a child, then their parents aren't doing their job.

What exactly is the big fuss about?! The game has been rated 18 by the BBFC anyway, which means that the game is explicitly not meant for kids! Its the same for DVD movies which have plenty of violence and sex in them, and yet no one complains of them! I for one, do not agree with porn, but this whole uproar about a sex scene is stupid as the game was rated 18 anyway! Why is everyone acting so surprised!?

Losers
If anyone wants to know the real problem with games like Grand Theft Auto, it is revealed in the foregoing 3 comments. What losers! I just don't know if it's a cause or effect of the game, but the game and losers go together.
Posted by: Sorry for Society 11 Jul 2005
They don't care
The people that create these games are ingoring their conscience for the thrill of getting rich. They probably think that this is a great publicity stunt. Maybe their hearts won't change until their car gets stolen, or one of their family members becomes a victim of drug addiction, or their kid sister turns to prostitution or gets raped by a person who is addicted to pornography. Then it won't be all fun and games anymore.
Posted by: Jason 11 Jul 2005
Theft itself ain't bad enough??
I find it laughable that concern is raised about hidden features in a game that the objetive is to steal and cheat. Would any parent recall his kids 'Grand Theft Auto' now because of sex scenes? If he/she let it into the household in the first place, she/he weren't practicing good parenting to begin with. Once again, hipocrisy dominates.
Posted by: Ricardo Paoletti 11 Jul 2005
Another blow
This just adds to the growing list of why this game is used to represent violent/sexual video games. If it's true that these scenes were already written into the code and the mod simply unlocked them, the developers should be slapped with a fine or something. True the game is already violent, but to have this hidden within the code. It SEEMS the developers did it on purpose to bypass the Adult-Only rating they might have been given before the game was released. I believe games can have influence with some of todays kids and we should really try to restrict or reduce the amount of violent/sexual content present in some of these games.

ha ha so now they have to control what mods people do to the game? Bottom line, it's not seen in the retail form it's not an issue. So if your teen in internet savvy and can figure out how to mod a game...they can see some really poor polygonal models of a "sex scene"? oh no!! send out an alert!!! oh wait...maybe they could just search for actual porn??
Posted by: concerned citizen 11 Jul 2005
How about parents being parents
Why is it that some Institute has to tell people how to parent their children? If a video game, web site, tv show or movie has some form of content or idea that you don't like, agree with, or feel your children are old enough DON'T LET THEM SEE IT!!! Come on people do you really need someone to tell you how to raise your children? You know that fire is hot so you don't let them play with it do you? Apply the same common sense to these forms of media. Do we need to ban a video game that was written for adults from an entire state to protect children of people who obviously do not want or know how to parent?
Posted by: Jo 11 Jul 2005
who shot who in the what now?
How exactly does this prove that "video games influence young people"? An adult found and created the modification, not a kid. If Rockstar was so proud of it, they would have touted it somewhere. I never understand why people make a big deal out of things if they want them to go away; it just makes people more curious.
Posted by: Diana 11 Jul 2005
Seriously...
Yes, games do influence kiddies, but they should have never gotten this type of game from the beginning. I must say, parents are the ones at fault. If we are doing what we are suppose to for our kids, they would've never gotten games like GTA series. The games are clearly designed for adults and have a big 'M' on the front warning the buyer. Please use your brain before doing something and stop blaming others.

"Internet Savvy?"
"Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas never belonged in the hands of kids. We are taking the unusual step of alerting parents to the pornography available through this game to any child or teen who is internet savvy." That has to be the best remark in the whole story ... So if the game were not installed on their machine, would an "internet savvy" teen be able to find porn? Wouldn't that porn be more offensive as it is real people and not cartoons? hmmm - The game IS offensive, that is the point, do yo think they'd have gotten so much money for a betty crocker cooking game?

Posted by: Leo Gmoney 11 Jul 2005
Missing the point
People who don't get offended by any kind of content most likely miss the point here. The point of rating systems for media is to give parents some control of what they decide they want to subject their children to not to mention themselves. The bottom line is that the rating of Grand Theft Auto should be moved to Adult so parents and people can make an informed choice.
Posted by: Dewko 11 Jul 2005
IT"S Rated MA for a Reason
While this is troubling information, it shouldn't be that shocking. The game's rating is "MA" for sexual content, violence, language and drug use. Any parent that would let their child play a game where success is acheived through drug deals, prostitution and violence, probably isn't too concerned about the unlocked sexual images. I am glad that the information is available but it shouldn't make parents who have allowed the game in their home upset. When you allow "MA" rated games into the home you should be prepared for all that comes with it. Afterall, it says right on the box that there is strong sexual content. Instead of the outrage for these images, we should be outraged by the entire game and the ideas it promotes.

Parental Alert
A nationwide parental alert? What parent in their right mind would get this game for their child? Parents who are that clueless about what they are buying for their children should not be allowed to be parents.
Posted by: zimon 11 Jul 2005
slippery slope
I'm sure people playing the game don't think of it as shocking to see police officers or civilians beat up. And I'm sure those same people are trying to unlock the stuff thats hidden on the game .. probably showing prostitutes beat up while they serve their customers. After all its just a game, like gangster rap is just music that doesn't do any harm. There have been focus groups that have found that these games and violent video games such as this do affect people negatively. Especially young people who have a harder time seeing right from wrong. Personally I play HL2, I'm sure some would call me a hypocrite, but in that game you blow up monsters and zombies. A game that promotes and shows you how to be a thug and pimp is no better than a manual to build a bomb.

Kids these days are so advanced. These so called game "MODS" are all over the place for many games. They can change how a game plays altogether. So some kid wrote a mod that shows sex seens so what - what about MODS that can blow up police cars with one hit.

Know how to Mod? Know Computers, Know Internet!
If someone knows how to MOD a game, chances are, this person knows exactly how to get porn alot easier then modding a video game. This is completely obsurd, and as the rating on the game says "M For MATURE AUDIENCES". Hey parents, THERE IS YOUR RED FLAG!! Then read the back of the box, and check out game reviews and artices on the game if you are still concerned. After that, stop wasting our time, and making a big deal out of some stupid animated naked bodies. If stuff like this "offends" you, Dont play the game, Dont watch the shows, Dont listen to the songs. Get a life, and stop ruining the good stuff for the people that actually want it!

Ummm Hello
Well honestly I think the sales for Grand Theft Auto just went up. And why is it that parents should be careful? Maure means you have to be 18 to buy the game. At eighteen you are a legal adult and can buy your own porn... If parents buy it for their kids obviously they aren't too worried, after all you can murder people in the most gruesome ways in the game, so who cares about sex? I would rather know that my guy friends are playing a porn minigame then killing people like they were nothing. That's a bit desensitizing if you ask me. I hope people wake up to see that this really is gonna do nothing more then make sales go up as no one that buys the game is gonna be to worried. Less you were a blind parent.

A simple way to settle this
Get the hot coffee source code, examine it, compile it, pick a shrink-wrapped copy of the game, install it, start the game, run the mod. If there is NO content, then hot coffe put it there. If there IS content, someone's probabaly already been fired.

Best intentions...
While I believe that the moral attitude of this Media Watchdog is in the right place. I feel that it is only yet another example of what is wrong with this world right now. Band Aids will not heal cancer people. Stop pointing out where the leaks are springing and let's turn off the water from the source. Analogies aside, the fact that this game exists at all or that an entire genre of games exists is the problem. The desire for kids to experience the extremes of life is a curiosity that is not being fulfilled in a healthy way. They have no viable alternative people. And the christian right is not providing anything worthwhile. Instead they point out what's wrong and offer a concentrated dose of religious guilt in it's place. KIDS DON'T BUY IT! They want to have fun. They want to experience what is cool. Let's change what is cool. It's on US, the responsible adults to start making the change. Kids follow our example. So stop telling them what's so wrong with the world and let's start building on what is right. I welcome responses.

its a game! first... if the kid can get the mod, he can probably look at porn anyway(like the other person said). second... this game shouldn't be so criticized. this game isn't half as bad as whats on the news these days. This game is just a game. It's not real. It's just coding.

Re: double edged sword
True, reporting it does make the public more knowledgeable. However, ethical reporting does not take responsibility for your decisions. Making parents aware of what their children have access to is a bonafide cause. What parents do with the knowledge (act or not) is up to them.

Rockstar has gone too far, but the media needs to point out the good games as well.
GTA is a series that is incredibly violent, personally as a GTA player I believe that it isn't age that should matter, but maturity. I have always known the difference between reality and a video game, I had to mature faster then normal though. As a hardcore gamer (for those that don't know the term, that means that I play every type of game and on most platforms, and am fairly addicted to certain games) I have seen alot of video games and the GTA series has stood in the top 25 for the most violent, top 5 for the most inappropriate, and top 5 for the most irrelevant. While Rockstar games has gone over the line with adding a porn movie in the game, the media and these groups should look at other titles. Games where there is so much blood, that you literally are wading knee deep in the dead. Those are the games that need to have attention brought to them. These groups also need to bring attention to games that are pure good fun. Ever hear of the Harvest Moon series? Didn't think so, its a series that is so addictive I know kids who have played it for two years, I have played one of those games for a year. Not because it is violent or bloody. But because it is pure and simple fun. Those games are ignored and generally are told only by word of mouth and known to hardcore gamers. Stop pointing out the bad games, point out the good ones. One way to stop things like what Rockstar did, is to point out the good games like Harvest Moon.
