Low-cost PC maker eMachines plans to build a sub-$600 web device to help push Microsoft MSN into more homes.
However, the manufacturer, which has a strategic relationship with high street electronics retailer Dixons, said it has no immediate plans to sell the device in the UK.
MSN Companion is scheduled to be released later this month and will cost about $550, including the monitor, but customers who sign a three-year contract with MSN will receive $400 off.
The device will sport a 200Mhz processor, 32Mb of SDRam memory, 16Mb of flash memory storage, a 56Kbps modem and Microsoft software.
According to Microsoft, some 40 per cent of US households still do not own a computer and are mainly put off by the price tag.
The software giant is not the only company targeting this potential group of users. AOL is developing its own appliance and a number of other PC manufacturers, including Compaq, are entering the market. IBM also plans to market a device that can be connected to the internet at broadband speeds.
