New York, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley will soon be receiving additional Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband coverage.
US telco Verizon said that it would be expanding its LTE network to some 38 new US cities by the end of the year.
The company said that the expansion would bring LTE coverage to some 110 million US citizens and many of the most heavily populated cities in the country.
Among the areas that will be added to Verizon's coverage are tech industry hotbeds such as Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Austin.
Major metropolitan areas of Texas, Florida and the US Eastern seaboard will also be covered by the expansion. Additionally, Verizon is planning to deploy LTE antennas in some 60 major airports throughout the US.
The company said that the expansion would provide the backbone for an LTE network that the company hopes will one day blanket the US.
"We are driven by the vision to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband connectivity and mobility to rural and urban Americans alike," said Verizon chief operating officer Lowell McAdam
"With our initial 4G LTE launch, we will immediately reach more than one-third of all Americans where they live, right from the start."
The move comes as telcos around the globe are looking to build wireless broadband networks to supersede their 3G networks. While firms such as Clearwire had previously experimented with WiMax, carriers now appear to be gravitating towards LTE.
