US firms are increasingly embracing multi-service business gateway (MSBG) devices, according to industry experts.
MSBGs combine the functionality of a router, Ethernet switch, security firewall, VoIP gateway and other appliances into a single device.
In-Stat predicts that MSBGs will be the means by which small and medium-sized businesses and branch offices adopt new IP communication technology and applications.
"The installation of new data communication equipment or replacement of data devices are the most common reasons for purchasing an MSBG," said In-Stat analyst Keith Nissen.
"However, the migration to VoIP technology is increasingly driving MSBG sales."
New In-Stat research suggests that more than half of all US businesses with more than 20 employees have installed MSBGs.
The study also noted that 60 per cent of businesses favour MSBGs with integrated Wi-Fi technology.
