Novell has combined its ZENworks management tools into a single suite.

The suite, ZENworks 6, is available now and includes new elements that include automatic data back-up and synchronisation across multiple platforms, and a tool to quickly replace the 'personality' of a desktop.

Other new features in the suite include personality migration, which allows the IT department to store details such as a user's wallpaper, toolbars and web favourites so that if the PC or laptop needs to be replaced it can be done with less effect on the user.

Novell claims the tool will cut down on lost productivity when users spend time rebuilding their desktop environments in the way they like them, and cut down helpdesk calls.

"In the past we've had a number of point products, but the channel and our customers have said they want one big ZENworks so they can do end-to-end management of their environments," said Novell product manager Richard Whitehead.

Other additions include tools to allow data synchronisation across PCs and handhelds, and support for RIM BlackBerry devices. The tools will also still be available as point products.

Novell is also selling a set of services, called Novell Resource Management, based on the ZENworks suite.

The company is to pass on its methodology to its top-level channel partners, and will give them technology and business process training and accreditation so that they can sell the services as well.

A spokeswoman said that because companies do not have to have the Netware operating system installed on their systems to use the ZENworks suite, Novell resellers would have a good opportunity to sell outside of their existing customer base.
