In a bid to tempt firms running Lotus Notes or Domino to defect to its Exchange offering, Microsoft today unveiled a suite of free tools designed to help organisations "analyse their Notes/Domino application environment" and move data to Microsoft's rival collaboration platform.
The tools, which will be available for free download, include the Microsoft Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino, Microsoft Data Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino, and the newly developed Windows SharePoint Services Application Templates.
Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino, which will ship in the first quarter of 2006, is designed to improve the process of analysing a Notes/Domino application environment and provide "a framework for making recommendations to transition those applications to the Microsoft platform".
Data Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino, scheduled to become available in the second quarter of 2006, allows organisations to migrate data from Lotus Domino template-based applications to Windows SharePoint Services Application Templates.
In addition, the Redmond giant announced the immediate availability of updated messaging and calendaring migration and coexistence tools, available for free download, that include Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes/Domino, Exchange Calendar Connector for Lotus Notes/Domino and Migration Wizard for Lotus Notes/Domino.
"Today we are responding to the strong demand we're seeing from customers using Lotus Notes/Domino who are planning a transition to this platform," claimed Kurt DelBene, corporate vice president of the Office Server Group at Microsoft.
"This announcement is a big step in our overall strategy towards helping these customers make the move so they can begin to take advantage of our platform's benefits."
Microsoft said that it will continue to deliver additional tools targeting Notes/Domino users.
"There is a recognised need to provide a way for customers to build and customise workflow-enabled applications on SharePoint products and technologies, and Microsoft will be addressing this need in the coming months," the firm said.

Data Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino
The so called migrator only works with standard templates that have not been modified in anyway. I have been working with Lotus Notes for 7 years at 4 different companies and not one of those companies used the standard templates without modification. All developed their own databases. This tool won't work for them. It's just another advertising ploy my Microsoft.

I tested this analyzer tool
With excitement I clicked to the announcement and through to download the tools. Instead of telling you what happened, I thought I'd show you. So here's the story in pictures. Remember, this is the final released version of the tools being run at a live production site of a major blue-chip corporation. I am a Lotus customer, not a supplier.

Whats wrong with Microsoft?
Anyone who develops a product for their OS is automatically considered a competitor and Microsoft will just squash them. Why would anyone want to develop an innovative software package for this platform? THis is just one good example why the company should be split up between an Applications and OS division. Remember when you could buy Visio for a decent price?

Microsoft will always Miss
Anyone that would even contemplate changing from lotus notes to Microshaft should be fired instantly for being stupid. Microsoft Exchange is one of the buggiest pieces of garbage ever released by any company, and with Microsoft's history that's saying something. Exchange is unsafe at any speed. I would liken microsoft's free tools to the drug dealers first taste free policy. Once you signup you're forever screwed.
