Siemens is offering a 48 hour build to order service for its Primergy range of servers through a tie up with distributor Ideal Hardware.
The company said the offer, which is available on its Intel based Primergy 470 and 170 workgroup and departmental servers, is aimed mainly at small and medium sized businesses. It offers a 48 hour delivery time for the servers, from initial order and specification through to customer building and delivery.
Ideal's UK based build to order and configuration service is technically vetted by Siemens and the company said that it will give customers greater flexibility with their business planning. It claimed that when customers decide to upgrade they can have their new systems up and running again within two days.
Ian Davidson, Siemens marketing manager, commented: "Although we build to order already on a factory level, one of the things we've been seeing in the server market is it can take between 10 and 14 days minimum to get the products. Smaller businesses need their products quicker than large enterprises which take a lot longer to plan."
He continued: "Ideal will configure each server to individual requirements within 48 hours."
Davidson explained that for high end servers, build to order in this way would not be practical.
"To keep all the different configurations for each server would be impossible," he said.
He said the service, which is available now, does not cost any extra.
