Samsung has confirmed that it will begin mass production of a 256Mb flash memory chip this summer to meet the growing demand for digital cameras, palm-sized PCs and digital music players.
The chip can hold the equivalent amount of data found in 16 CDs or 280 picture files.
Flash memory chips, which retain data even when the power is switched off, are one of the fastest growing markets in the semiconductor industry as electronics companies release an ever growing range of portable digital products.
Semco Research predicts that the market for these chips will grow at an annual rate of 70 per cent, reaching a total market value of $2.27bn by 2002.
