The FBI arrested more than 90 people yesterday as part of a 14-month anti-paedophilia operation, codenamed 'Candyman'.
The investigation uncovered surfers posting, emailing and exchanging pornographic images of children in three electronic message groups hosted by Yahoo.
According to reports, up to four Catholic priests, a police officer, a school bus driver, a nurse and a classroom assistant were arrested.
One of the groups, www.egroups.com/groups/thecandyman, which has since been shut down, had an estimated 7,000 members, mostly US-based.
The FBI celebrated its crackdown on "an international ring of paedophiles and predators" committed to exchanging sick material online, and promised further arrests.
Speaking to press at FBI headquarters, Attorney General Richard Ashcroft said: "There will be no free rides on the internet for the traffickers in child pornography."
