The Intel-Micron joint venture has begun the commercial release of its 25nm Nand Flash memory chips.
The companies said that mass production of the chips is underway, and that Intel is shipping them to customers.
The 25nm chips, unveiled in February, make use of the more precise manufacturing processes to create smaller, denser memory.
Intel and Micron estimate that the new chips can offer double the capacity at the same physical size as previous chips, placing 8GB of storage on a single Nand device.
The chips will be able to cut the price of solid state hard drives in half, the firms said. Other possible applications include USB storage drives and SD storage cards.
Availability of the 25nm chips comes roughly one month after one of Intel-Micron's competitors announced an even smaller chip.
Samsung said that it is developing 20nm chips for use in SD cards which will be released by the end of the year.
