IBM has launched a new project designed to integrate virtual world technology with its Sametime collaboration and real-time communication products.
Sametime 3-D will allow users to communicate via instant messaging but in a virtual world environment.
The application will also offer a virtual meeting space, giving the option to attach files, choose meeting space type and access full avatar functionality, according to IBM.
"Extending the real-time connection between people into a 3D medium enhances the experience and productivity of teams located across the country or the world," said Colin Parris, vice president of digital convergence at IBM Research.
IBM is also looking to rollout recording and reporting functionality in the future, enabling users to capture text chat, video record meetings and maintain a record of participants and materials, said the firm.
