Peer-to-peer software developer BitTorrent has unveiled a software development kit for consumer electronics devices.

The goal of BitTorrent's Software Licensing and Related Device Certification Programme is to ensure a superior entertainment experience for users of a growing array of consumer electronics integrating BitTorrent technology.

BitTorrent is enabling hardware manufacturers to bundle and embed integrated content delivery services for products such as network attached storage (Nas) devices, set-top boxes, digital media adapters and routers.

Buffalo, a manufacturer of wireless and wired networking, storage and memory kit, is the latest to announce that it will integrate BitTorrent functionality into its next generation of Nas devices.

Buffalo will also participate in BitTorrent's Device Certification Programme, which provides seamless compatibility between hardware and the expanding number of BitTorrent-based consumer and commercial-grade services.

BitTorrent has already teamed up with chipmakers Marvell Semiconductor and iAdea/Star Semiconductor, and hardware manufacturers ASUSTeK, Netgear, Planex Communications and QNAP Systems.

"We see BitTorrent as broadband's next killer app," said Morikazu Sano, assistant general manager of global marketing at Buffalo.
