Nintendo reported a 51 per cent drop in operating income in the six month period that ended on 30 September, relative to the same period last year. The maker of the Gamecube and Gameboy gaming consoles reported a profit of 19.6bn yen (£95.6m). Revenue fell by 6.2 per cent to 176bn yen (£860m).
The drop in profit can be partially explained by a 4bn yen (£19.5m) increase in research in new products such as the next generation Nintendo Revolution console, which is slated for release later next year. The company forecasts that in the current fiscal year it will be spending 33bn yen (£160m) on research and development.
"The market for the current generation of console hardware is becoming saturated and is approaching a transitional phase to next generation consoles," Nintendo reported in a regulatory filing. "As a result, the overall video game market generally showed a declining tendency."
Shipments of the Nintendo Gamecube dropped by 42 per cent from last year's 1.4m to 810,000. The portable Nintendo DS that was introduced earlier this year did significantly better, selling 2.59m units.
Nintendo is aiming to tackle the slow down in the gaming industry by expanding the base of gamers to include people who have stopped playing video games as well as new gamers, the filing said. The new portable Ninendo DS is an example of the new strategy, and the forthcoming Nintendo Revolution is aiming to deliver the same to the console market.
Where the Nintendo DS features dual screens, the Revolution is expected to debut a newly designed controller.
Nintendo's disappointing financial results come only days after Microsoft started shipping its new Xbox 360 gaming console. In most stores the device sold out within hours and Microsoft predicted that it would sell 3m of the consoles within the first 90 days.

I agree with Peter... For $400, XBox360 crashes avery other day and 8 months after its release there still only 3 games worth of spending money & time on... As for PS3, at $500 price it should better have a full featured Linux OS, so it could serve as an entry-level PC also, or Sony wont get desired sales... Besides, Zelda will not be available for any other platform, including PC...

First off the only good game on the XBOX is Halo, really teh XBox is a Halo-adapter. Personally I have gone through 4 Xboxs but still have my original GCN, and it's seen way more hours of game play due to SSBM than any of teh XBoxes and its still ticking. ON a different note, Microsoft got greedy and launched their system for the christmas season with three huge flaws; not enough supply for demand, no good game titles and their all crashing like crazy. Personally, I don't see how Nintendo or Sony can do any worse.

Nintendo is dealt a blow in console war
Nintendo have messed up at least one major issue with each of it's last 2 consoles. The N64 should of been a CD based system with better 3rd party support and the Gamecube needed to have DVD playback to match the opposition. Put these changes with some decent advertising and Nintendo would stand a chance against Microsoft and Sony. They need to compete on equal terms not just be different for the sake of it. These differences are seen by most as weaknesses not strengths.

nintendo going down
so this new nintendo system better be the most amazing thing in the world..since the gamecube is terrible. i baught it and it had potential but now it licks balls. no good games, their all for xbox/ps2..and the online is terrible since their are no good games to play. I hear the new controllers are one handed..i dont know how much drugs they sell in japan but this is the worse idea in the world...this is what u gotta do 1) Every game that comes out for the other systems..should be for nintedo 2) Stop making these stupid mario games. no one plays them sept little kids..and they dont count anywaysA 3) MORE ONLINE. i baught the xbox 360 and its online is pretty awsome..if nintendo comes out with that..im buying it. So these are my comments..and i really doubt that this new system will be any better...and if its not...nintendo should just...close down cause their getting beat.

This article is a biased piece of stupid mess. Nintendo is going to outsell ps3 and xbox360 by A LOT. THe xbox360 has reported many problems with their system and also the ps3 is just a bad system so NINTENDO REVOLUTION PWNS TOTALLY. THEY'll make all the money back from nintendo revolution

long live nintendo
its sad to see this happening to such a great company. i dearly hope the ds and revolution pull it out and restore it to its former glory. i love nintendo, i've been a loyal nintendo fan my whole life. mario, zelda and metroid are mainstays in my collection, i still own copies of the old games and will continue to keep them with me. i grew up on nintendo's video games. now i am a freshman in college. i'll be waitin in line to buy the revolution the day its released.

Nintendo walking on thin ice...
I clearly remember the remarks made by marketing dep. of Nintendo a year ago or so. They stated that Revolution wouldn't be a traditional console connected to the TV as always. This paradigm would be broken. And now, this paradigm break shows to be a new controller. Ridiculous.
