IPv6
IPv4 addresses are expected to run out in two years

European regional internet registry Ripe NCC today launched a new resource designed to help organisations plan and deploy IPv6 in their environments.

How To Act Now is a new section on Ripe's IPv6 Act Now site offering expert advice, video clips and hints and tips.

The resource is split into four sections targeted at Small Business, Enterprises, ISPs, and Government, focusing on the planning and implementation challenges faced by technical and business users.

Ripe warned once again that organisations which delay adoption of the new internet protocol face increased costs and potential operational problems due to poor procurement planning and rushed deployments.

"With most estimates putting IPv4 exhaustion only two years away, at best, it is clear that concerted action on IPv6 deployment is necessary to ensure the stability of the internet and its continued growth," said Axel Pawlik, managing director of Ripe NCC.

"Failure to deploy IPv6 ahead of the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses is one of the biggest threats facing the internet today."
