Compuware released version 3.0 of its OptimalJ model driven architecture (MDA)-based Java development software.

OptimalJ 3.0 enhancements include plug-ins for integrated development environments (IDEs) including IBM WebSphere Studio and SunONE Studio, and a low-cost developer edition excluding system architect and designer tools.

OptimalJ implements the Object Management Group's MDA standard throughout to generate working J2EE applications from models created in the universal modelling language format.

Benchmark released by Compuware claimed OptimalJ can produce a tested application 35 per cent faster than other IDEs.

"MDA helps bridge the gap between the business analyst and developer as there is a common model to work with, and it also assists with reuse and maintenance of applications," said Tim Jennings, research production director at analyst Butler Group.

Jennings added that a benefit of OptimalJ was that not everyone in the development team needed to be an experienced developer.

According to Ruud Grotens, OptimalJ product manager, during the benchmarking the traditional IDE developers produced a first prototype more rapidly, but after MDA was faster.

"MDA is faster for a first application, and this should improve further with subsequent developments that reuse customised patterns [stored code]," he added.

But analyst Jennings cautioned that MDA was not suited to every situation. "You've got to ask if it is right for your organisation and for the application you are building," he said.

OptimalJ 3.0 comes in three editions:

  • New Developer Edition, approximately £500 per developer, supports J2EE development and integration;
  • Professional Edition, c£3,150, adds modelling and development integration;
  • Architecture Edition, c£6,300 per named architect, adds pattern design allowing architects to implement and enforce their defined standards and guidelines.

OptimalJ pattern source code licences start at £3,150 per site.
