Researchers at the University of Louisville claim to have developed wires a thousand times thinner than a human hair.

The wires could be used in sensors, fuel cells and solar devices, as well as in anti-bioterrorism and military apparel.

Crops of the so-called nanowires are grown on a solid surface covered by a thin film of molten gallium which is exposed to a gas.

The process can also be used to build silicon, carbon, gallium oxide and gallium nitride wires.
