Gartner has outlined 10 mobile technologies which it claims should be on every organisation's radar for the coming year.
The analyst firm said that the technologies were selected because they will evolve in ways that affect corporate strategies and challenges, or will be adopted or expected by significant numbers of employees.
Gartner analyst Nick Jones pointed to a dramatic rise in the use of the mobile internet, claiming that 85 per cent of handsets shipped globally are expected to include a form of web browser by 2011.
The analyst also said that a move to smartphones with large and high-resolution screens will increase the amount of communication between businesses and consumers without needing to adapt web sites or tools.
Gartner said that mobile widgets used to deliver real-time data updates for applications such as email notifications, blogs and information feeds will grow dramatically.
This explosion of the mobile web will make application stores integral to the growth of mobile applications, and Gartner expects many applications to exploit "ecosystem cloud services".
