European software developer Canonical, creator of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has announced that version 7.10 of the Ubuntu Server, Desktop, Kubuntu and Edubuntu editions will be made available for free download on 18 October.
Ubuntu makes no distinction between community and enterprise editions, and Ubuntu 7.10 is available free to all.
The Ubuntu platform is one of the more popular Linux distributions, often seen as a secure choice for users looking to explore the open source operating system. Ubuntu's tag line is that Linux should 'just work'.
The latest desktop version adds an enhanced user interface, improved hardware support, multiple monitor support and integrated desktop search.
The server platform features improved functionality and manageability, proactive security and hardware compatibility, as well as a rapid deployment platform for developers and businesses.
New versions of Kubuntu and Edubuntu, derivatives of Ubuntu aimed respectively at KDE enthusiasts and the education community, are also being released at the same time.
"We are privileged to have millions of users running Ubuntu every day," said Jane Silber, chief operating officer at Canonical UK.
"This gives us great insight into what they want from a free, Linux-based platform. Ubuntu 7.10 is another milestone in delivering on these requirements on the desktop and server."
