Sony has launched the opening salvo in the online gaming war with Microsoft by releasing an internet adapter for its PlayStation 2 console.

The adapter will allow gamers in the US to battle with each other over the internet.

Sony is hoping to sell 400,000 adapters by the end of the year, a small percentage of the 11 million consoles it has sold.

The sector is considered fertile ground for the games industry, with Microsoft due to release an internet adapter for its Xbox machine in November.

Nintendo has said that it will bring out network adapters this year for its GameCube console, but is yet to provide additional information.
