Newly formed networking giant Alcatel-Lucent has announced the availability of its OmniSwitch 9800, the latest member of the company's family of 10-Gigabit Ethernet core switches.
The 9800 chassis features twice the capacity of the OmniSwitch 9700 and is offered alongside a new high-density 10-Gigabit Ethernet module and a new power-over-Ethernet Gigabit Ethernet module.
Similar to the other OmniSwitch 9000 models, the 9800 delivers wire-rate processing for IPv6/IPv4 and supports multicast applications.
The unit can also be used at the edge to support converged applications and deliver quality of service for multi-media applications, VoIP, video collaboration and database applications.
"Enterprise network managers have been looking for switches that have a higher switching capacity to improve their network's performance, and are upgrading wiring closets as well," said Steven Schuchart, senior analyst for enterprise networks at Current Analysis.
The Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9800 is available from $7,495.
