HP has issued a worldwide recall of 135,000 batteries shipped with some of its HP and Compaq notebook computers. The units could overheat, causing damage to the computer.
The company has received 16 reports of units overheating. In four cases the batteries caused minor damage when they started to melt.
HP recommends that batteries showing any signs of overheating, such as discoloration, should be switched off immediately. Battery packs that show no sign of overheating also need to be replaced, the firm said.
The affected units carry a barcode that starts with GC, IA, L0 or L1. The batteries were manufactured between March and September 2004.
Further information on affected systems and how to exchange the battery is available on HP's website here.
