Yahoo has updated its Hadoop Java framework in a bid to increase uptake in the enterprise market.
The company said the update would add security and workflow management capabilities to the Hadoop platform.
The security update will add the Kerberos authentication protocol. Yahoo said that the addition of Kerberos would improve authentication and collaboration, along with adding support for multi-tennancy.
Yahoo is also adding its own Oozie workflow manager to Hadoop. The tool was designed by Yahoo for internal use on large-scale systems and features support for the Hadoop file system, Pig programming environment and MapReduce component.
The company is hoping that the Hadoop platform, which has served Yahoo in its own systems, will also appeal to scientific groups and enterprises looking to build and manage large-scale databases.
"Hadoop is where science meets big data, it’s the technical underpinning that powers our innovative consumer and advertiser products on the world’s most-advanced digital canvas," said Yahoo executive vice president and chief product officer Blake Irving.
"Yahoo's cloud and Hadoop make it possible for Yahoo to rapidly personalise our content and advertising, and deliver highly relevant experiences, while maintaining the trust of our 600 million users."
