The UK ranks a lowly 33rd in the global home internet speed rankings, according to Net Index, a new site from broadband testing group Ookla.
In first place is South Korea, which has average downstream speeds of 34Mbit/s. This is 100 times faster than the average in Sudan, which in 153rd place.
The UK averages 7.69Mbit/s, and the top locations for home broadband speeds are Loughton, Welling, Dartford, Clitheroe and Troon. London fails to make the top 30 cities in the UK for internet speeds.
Overall, the UK has an average home upstream speed of 0.91Mbit/s, and a quality rating of just over 81 per cent.
This ranking takes the UK into the 'desirable' category, and the government may feel vindicated about its plans to increase speeds across the country.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to high-speed broadband in the Queen's Speech yesterday, outlining plans for increased investment.
In addition, the government's coalition agreement document shows a clear focus at the Department for Culture Media and Sport for "superfast broadband".

Its BT`s problem now........
This is stated for one good reason, BT havenot updated their phone lines in years, I cant get my ISP`s full speed of 24 meg because my phone line cant handle it, all i can get is this rather pathetic 5.3 meg. SO British Telecom, its down to you now. You have taken all our cash for the LINE rental, now lets see you put some of that back in bringing this country back inline with the rest of the world....... I wont hold my breathe however....

UK doing badly on home broadband speeds
Frankly, I would be delighted with 7.69 or even 5. Since Talk Talk took over Tiscali my speed has dropped to around 2 Mbits or less and the line frequently drops out as well. Complaints go in the bin as far as I can tell. Poppa

Broadband speeds.
On good days my Broadband down load speed is 1.1Mbs, on average, most days if lucky 14Kbs. My provider states this is due to my Web contacts outputs that controls download speeds. Provider says my download speed allocated to my account is 10Mbs, well not to my knowledge.
