A man who shot himself over a failed relationship survived thanks to the text message he sent to his ex-girlfriend describing what he was about to do.

She contacted police, who managed to trace the 38-year-old Italian's location via his mobile phone network.

Police located him in a country shed, bleeding, after he had shot himself in the heart with his rifle.

He is said to be recovering from his ordeal in hospital, after an operation, according to Italian newspaper Il Resto del Carlino.
