Itanium users may have to wait until the end of the year to get the full benefits of their processors with 32-bit applications.
The 64-bit processor offers limited benefits for companies with 32-bit applications because it is not optimised for the code.
Intel has confirmed that its IA32 Execution Layer software, code-named btrans, will not be released until late this year.
The software emulates a 32-bit processor and will be a plug-in module for operating systems.
The code will be available as part of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack One, and Intel is also in talks with Linux distributors.
It will be included with the forthcoming 1.5GHz Itanium 2 processor and is claimed to make 32-bit applications as fast as similarly rated Xeons.
