The other major improvement comes in the form of built-in network connectivity for online gaming across Europe. It also incorporates technology designed to enable gamers to play without the use of a controller, with future games currently being developed to use this feature.
In addition to the 1,000 existing games for the platform, Sony promises that a line-up of new titles will support the redesigned console, scheduled for launch in time for the peak Christmas period.
David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said: "In the future the combination of the new PlayStation 2 with new software you are able to play games without the controller, and this is going to bring in lots of new people."
