Browser for Ovi uses compression technology to reduce costs

Nokia is to push its new Ovi Browser to all Series 40 phones, claiming to provide a better and more affordable browsing experience.

The company is aiming the release principally at emerging markets, although Nokia expects all users to be able to take advantage of an improved internet experience "minus the price tag of a smartphone and data charges".

"Nokia helps value-driven users get online and get more out of the internet with the new Browser for Ovi that seamlessly combines advanced compression and optimisation technology and Ovi services to make the internet easier, faster and less costly," wrote Simon Hunt, of Nokia's mobile solutions team, in a blog post.

"Web pages load faster, and you get more browsing for your money with data saving compression levels that you choose."

Browser for Ovi is available to download for Series 40 phones such as the 2700 Classic, 2730 Classic, 3120 Classic, 3600 Slide, 5130 XpressMusic and 5220 Xpressmusic. Owners of compatible handsets should visit the dedicated page.

Nokia said that the browser will come preinstalled on many Series 40 phones beginning in 2011, and that the firm is preparing a commercial release for next year.
