Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a general-purpose interface for computer peripheral devices that was intended to replace older interfaces such as serial, PS/2 and parallel printer ports.

USB has largely become the standard way to connect devices such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner or digital camera, and is also used for storage such as USB Flash drives and synchronising smartphones and media players with content on the computer.

USB 1.0 was a relatively slow standard, while USB 2.0 is the most frequently found implementation, fast enough for most purposes at 480Mbit/s per port.

A faster version, USB 3.0, can transfer data up to ten times faster, but has yet to be supported on many PCs or devices as of early 2011.
